With the birth of a baby, a woman's body goes through rapid, major hormonal and chemical changes in her body. It takes a few weeks for these hormone and chemical balances to reach a stable point.
All women experience a certain amount of depression, there is continued pain and wound care, loss of sleep, milk production and associated frustration or painfulness, her emotions have reached an anticipated peak and now she has the "day after" emotional let down from the high, babies cry a lot & moms don't know what the cry means, it is frustrating, new parents are hit with an enormous sense of the responsibility for a new life, often times this new baby suffers illness, other children in the household tend to regress in their behaviors as they demand attention.
Relatives often come to visit the baby or for a prolonged stay in the woman's home. All these things are added to the woman's usual daily duties - basically she is "on emotional overload" with a body that hurts and isn't working right.
For women who's depression becomes severe, there are mood swings of anger - despair - exhaustion - and being emotionally upset with tears.
As these moods take their turns, the deeply depressed woman can move rapidly into a mood of desperation, believing that a decision between life and death is up to her - with a rapidly approaching deadline.
Mom's who are themselves, at risk for suicide, or who may harm or kill their babies during postpartum depression, are caught in this type of unstable mood and beliefs.
